Why AI writing sounds like AI
Language models are trained to predict the most likely next word, which makes them gravitate toward the safest, most-published phrasing for any idea. That is why AI text over-selects formal connectives (moreover, furthermore, additionally), ornate vocabulary (delve, tapestry, myriad, multifaceted), and importance-flagging hedges (it is important to note) at rates far above natural human writing.
No single phrase proves anything, humans wrote all of these first. The signal is density and clustering: three strong tells in one paragraph, the same transition opening every section, or interlocked clichés like "navigate the ever-evolving landscape." Human cliché use is scattered; AI cliché use is combinatorial.
The fix is nearly always the same: replace the abstract claim with a specific fact. "Plays a pivotal role" becomes the actual mechanism. "A rich cultural heritage" becomes one real tradition. Specificity is the one thing prediction-based writing struggles to fake, which is why it reads as human.
